Click to see it at full resolution - Alison’s captions are pretty great!
This was one heck of a fun assignment. Thanks to arts editor Alison Hallett and AD Justin Morrison at the Portland Mercury for trusting me with it.
If you’re in Portland this week, pick up a copy of the paper - some of the faces from this piece are also used as spot illustrations for other pieces in the loving and detailed coverage of the festival.

I just posted something I’ve been wanting to write for a long time: an essay on how NOT to write comics criticism. It’s my personal hit-list of the top ten intellectual misconceptions, dumb shortcuts, and silly cliches that I encounter in otherwise intelligent book reviews, articles, and interviews.
You can read it over at my blog!

Finally, I can tell you all some news I’ve been wanting to share for a long time.

If you’re thinking: Hmm, that copy of Empress looks a little different. More…substantial, somehow…

I must congratulate you on your keen perceptive eye. The book has been reissued, and it now includes:

Dylan Meconis, my best friend of over a decade, has just launched her first Kickstarter campaign to fund not one, not two, but THREE books of hers! She is a wonderful, hardworking artist with years of experience self-publishing, so this girl knows how to get shit done and make it look amazing. But she needs some up-front cash to make this all happen!

This money goes towards:

-Re-printing Bite Me! (And if the KS cracks $17890, we’ll get a BRAND NEW 11 page story about Audric!)

-Printing her Eisner Award-nominated short story, Outfoxed, for the first time!

-Printing a mini art book of her Danse Macabre 2.0 illustrations

And even if you can’t back this project yourself, at least watch her video— it is delightful and entertaining and I refuse to believe you have a human heart if you don’t laugh at least once.

I’ve had these sketches sittin’ on my hard drive for too long! So here, have a line-up of the major female characters from the first two Star Trek shows. I had a good time!

I did this one last year, but I think it bears reposting on this, the most sacred of bank holidays.
