To wrap up our Thunderbolts week, we’ve got a glimpse of a Thunderbolts script from issue 152 from writer Jeff Parker!
Panel 1/ BIG / Hyperion is floating in the air in the habitat, looking at Man-Thing warily as Man-Thing looks back manthingedly at him. Mach V is standing or hovering there too. Yes, there’s a reason we’re putting that title on this page instead of the spread of the next!
CAPTION: “… to meet your new teammate.”
HYPERION: I guess I understand the idea behind this… teleporting…
2: … but if everyone would get in a vehicle, I could carry us all there in minutes.
TITLE: GREAT BIG MONSTERS
CREDITS: Jeff, Kev, Frank, Albert
Panel 2/ Hyperion and the Bolts regard each other as Cage steps down into the murk, pointing at Mach V.
CAGE: We roll exclusively by Man-Thing, Hyperion.
2: You’ve all been briefed on each other, no time for training. Get along.
3: All right Mach V, fire him up.
MACH V: Check.
Panel 1/ inset / The silhouettes of everyone stand in the swirling energy of the teleport.
MACH V: I was just checking the feed from Pan-Asia…
Panel 2/ inset. Any Bolts you want to show- and the stoic Hyperion are looking up as they materialize.
MACH V: … we’re cutting it close.
SONGBIRD: No kidding. I’d hoped we could intercept them further off shore.
Panel 3/ SPREAD: Three giant monsters who would normally be fighting Godzilla are approaching the coastline. Wow they’re big. Boats are being pushed up away by the swell of waves. One of the monsters is flying. I thought about describing what they could be, but that would probably just take the fun out of it for you. I’ll instead describe what they’re doing with just a few details and you can design as you like. MONSTER A has heavy armor, like a rhino/tortoise, he could be a corresponder to Gamera if you want. Make his arms too short to reach his mouth. MONSTER B could be more like a lobster, lower- I guess not unlike the “Sea Monster” Godzilla fought in the movie of the same name. MONSTER C is flying, a Rodan-like creature. MONSTER D, just make him something related to GORGO, the one British entry in the giant monster cinema. I am very pro-Gorgo. I kind of like when they have small eyes, like Geof Darrow would do, it feels right, since a blue whale’s eyes don’t get incredibly big like its body. But reality isn’t that big a concern here, obviously. The one detail, which should be kind of subtle- they all have barnacles on their backs in places, that would come up to our knees if we were standing next to them. These are the bio-programmers that are controlling them, making them attack civilization. Which looks like a few good sized glass buildings to knock down right here near the shore. There could be a temple nearby. Maybe some news helicopters are buzzing around.
Cage is already starting to run forward, Hyperion and Moonstone are hovering.
FLOATING TEXT: MATSUSHITO CITY, JAPAN.
JUGGERNAUT: Hot damn those things are big.
GHOST: Do they possess any less obvious defenses- venom?
CAGE: We don’t know. Let’s get it in gear!
